PATCHES: 1376, 1484, 1484

I was waiting until 2.14 was out, but we hit 30 patches pending
approval, so I've stepped in.  I'm going to sort through the list,
clarifying when something is waiting for a second version from the
author, and when something is waiting for reviewers or somebody to
push it.

I have 3 patches that I'm putting on my "48 hour" list.  Unless I
hear any complaints, or requests for more time, I will push these
at 18:00 on Monday, 24 Jan.  They've all passed the regtest
comparison, and I've built the docs from scratch with them.  They
all look pretty clear and self-contained.
