Yes, I think the current version is better than the old. It looks to me
that something like the new version is what was intended. (I say
something like because I don't want to argue about a pixel here or
there!). I ran lily 2.13.47 on a large score with a lot of passages like
the test passage and the results look good to me.
However if we accept the new behaviour then that is a change and ought
to be documented somewhere.
