I'll note that this issue was the only incompatibility with automake 1.4
in libtool. Is there some reason not to provide compatibility back with
this version? I continue to struggle with versioning issues in automake
and have frozen at version 1.4 until I see better backward/forward
compatibility in that project. But, as that fix is separable from the
-version-number flag, I'll leave it out for now.
