need help for install the opening book gnuchess

can you explain me exactly step by step the way to how install the 
opening book for gnuchess.when i folow the explain i can't do it. 
exemple i install the gnuchess5.06 he works on xboard and consol mode but 
whan i try to install the book by "book add book.pgn" tne console says 
the syntaxe for a naw book is book add file.pgn it's exactly what i do 
no? explain me thanks a lot
