Agreed, we surely don't want to break current Info readers.
Various info
documentation has index entries such as:
Foo::bar: Foo's bar
and they're already dead links now, which is very bad. That's why I
proposed escaping : with : in (index) references, the info file would
then read:
Foo::::bar: Foo's bar
It's not aesthetically pleasing, but I fail to see why this would
break current Info readers any more than than they're already broken
now.
The new readers would jump to node Foo::bar.

If anything's seriously broken, it needs to be fixed. Too bad if it's
much work: it will probably take longer.
