[Help-stow] "Failed to compile regexp" trying to run Stow on Ubuntu

Can anyone get Stow working on Ubuntu 14.04?

$ sudo apt-get install stow
$ stow -vd ~/stow my_package
Failed to compile regexp: Unmatched ) in regex; marked by <-- HERE in
m/^( <-- HERE $/ at /usr/share/perl5/Stow.pm line 1347, <REGEXPS> line

This is Stow 2.2.0-2 from the Ubuntu 14.04 repos. Also tried
installing 2.2.2, 2.2.0, 2.1.3, 2.1.2 and 2..1. from source but all
had the same error. 2.1.0 has a different error.

1.3.2 works though! :)

I have 2.2.2 installed from source working on a newer version of Ubuntu (15.10)'
