Dmitri,
You are correct in that it could have been some other non-printing
character, and not a space or tab at the end of the file. All I know is that
when I moved down to the last line, I could move the cursor one character to
the right and then use the delete key to eliminate the blank character.
The file came from a Linux-based data acquisition system, then to a Windows
laptop, then to a G4 Mac, then via e-mail to my G5 Mac. Somewhere along the
line, the file was changed to Mac line feeds (probably by e-mail), so I had
to reconvert to Unix line feeds to use the file with octave. Any of those
changes could have corrupted the file.
