[Q] No numel()?

Subject: [Q] No numel()?

Greeting!
I am using numel() frequently rather than length() in for-loops
in MatLab because the definition of numel() is often closer
to intended purpose in most for-loops.
Recently, I switched to Octave, but found no numel().
Is there any special reason for the omission?
Thanks in advance.

Peter
