If linebreaks are lost, then tell nano that ^Js are linebreaks.
Instead of the "unbind ^J main", put this line in your nanorc:

   bind ^J Enter main

^Js never caused Enters in nano.  If things changed for you,
it must be because your setup changed somehow.
