i downloaded an debian etch netinst iso created a new partition (everything, whole installation). grub install in mbr fails as always. lilo worked this time.

booting with lilo fails (no error message). booting with grub now fails with:

----------------------------------------------

grub> boot
Uncompressing Linux...

invalid compressed format (other)

 -- System halted

----------------------------------------------

i will try an ubuntu 9.04 server iso and then just throw everything out of the window :/

Please try recompiling or using an alternative kernel, it looks like there might be an issue with the kernel -post- grub.
