I think SVG seems like a really good alternative.
I can't find a complete syntax reference tho. This is
the best page I found so far:

The .svg extension in Emacs gives me the major mode
`nxml-mode'
nXML mode defined in ‘nxml-mode.el’:
Major mode for editing XML.
So a file test.svg:
<svg width="10" height="10">
<rect
x="0"
y="0"
width="10"
height="10"
fill="blue"
/>
</svg>
works well! Only not in feh(1), my image viewer [1] -
but with
$ convert test.svg test.png
I get a PNG!
