My personal favorite:

   (defun autocompile nil
     "compile itself if ~/.emacs"
     (interactive)
     (if (string= (buffer-file-name) (concat default-directory ".emacs"))
         (byte-compile-file (buffer-file-name))))

   (add-hook 'after-save-hook 'autocompile)

Never byte-compile your .emacs file by hand again!
