I should have said that I used the string produced by describe-font:

name (opened by):
       full name: Topaz-8-7.0
            size:  9
          height:  9
 baseline-offset:  0
relative-compose:  0

and put into .emacs :


But when I open .emacs now I get the error:

error: Invalid font name,
