It is event-driven, and you set "traps", which then get evaluated
at appropriate times. Unfortunately the manual is a bit spread,
and you will find yourself jumping around like grazy before you
get the glue and only need to look up details. I think reading
the original document from Joseph F. Ossanna and Brian W.
Kernighan is a better starter than the GNU troff manual. Search
the internet for cstr#54-troff-revised.pdf -- some members of this
list have revised the original, and i think for the better.
