I would vote for the 1% performance gain.  Normally I like simpler
code, but it seems to me that the board library is sufficiently
divorced from the rest of the program that making it simpler or more
complex won't have much of an impact on normal GNU Go hacking. 
However, a 1% gain, while small, is useful (every litttle bit helps
:)).
