I think that doing some PR work for the day that Vista is launched is a
great idea.

A gnu costume would be better:

Highlighting the Linux kernel mascot is entrenching the mistake that the
Linux kernel developers are the authors of the operating system.

When newspapers report something positive, they love to dedicate the last
two paragraphs to a counter-view. This is low hanging fruit. If we could
get GNU mentioned at the end of a bunch of the Vista launch articles, that
would be very good.
If we are to hand out CDs, we should hand out ones that have only free
software. I know of two fully free GNU/Linus distros:

I think this deadline might also be a motivator for the developers of free
software desktop projects, but I don't think we should focus on improving
our software. Improving our software is something we are doing constantly,
but this one day is a PR project.
