Tom,

While granting you notice up-front would have been polite, I'm not sure
that what Canonical did is something that would necessarily be
considered "uncivil". They're starting their own branch with the intent
of focusing on a specific featureset -- good for them, and I sincerely
hope it results in quality ideas/patches/whatnot being created.

As a casual observer, I don't get the impression that Canonical wants
their fork to supercede the Arch project; rather, I get the impression
that they just want the ability to go off for a while and do their own
thing in the hopes that it eventually results in a better UI for all
concerned.

Correspondingly, I'm not entirely sure what coopertion I should be
skeptical about offering Canonical. Providing UI suggestions and
feedback, if doing so is likely to result in a better UI being created
(particularly should there be potential for that to feed back into GNU
Arch proper) seems entirely appropriate. On the other hand, it seems
quite unlikely that I would choose to use their fork should they make
incompatible archive format changes without your agreement -- and as I
get the impression that they understand and acknowledge that you "own"
the archive format and protocol, this possibility doesn't worry me much
either.

Could you clarify, then, as to what I should be skeptical about at this
stage?
