How is this different than "tla undo -- FILE..." (I don't know if this
is Tom's tla; it's in jblack's tla-1.3 branch though, and works fine)?

I think that's just historical reasons. The wiki was written for tla
1.2, and "tla undo -- FILE" didn't exist at that time.

Considering 1.2.2 never made it past rc stage, and 1.2.1 was buggy, tla undo -- FILE still doesn't exist in some senses. The debian package, for example, is still based on 1.2.

tla undo -- FILE also can't restore deleted files, though the wiki recipes can.
