If I understand you - it doesn't have to. You can redundantly 'add'
with no ill effects. Is that what you meant?

Umm... huh? tla tree-root will tell you if you're in a tree or not, if
that's what you mean.
The {arch} dirs mark the _roots_ of the trees.
