It turned out that 'alias char-major-161 ircomm-tty'
in /etc/modprobe.conf wasn't enough, I had to explicitly modprobe
ircomm-tty. (This was under Mandriva 2006 Official.)

I used the official Mandriva rpm, I have now built a new rpm with
0.6.10. Works well so far.
