Did the following after reboot
as root : 
irattach irda0 -s
modprobe ircomm

as user mschuene (in group gnokii)
xgnokii

In /var/log/messages I see
Couldn't open PHONET device: No route to host
connect: No route to host
...
Couldn't open PHONET device: No route to host
connect: No route to host
Couldn't open PHONET device: No route to host
connect: No route to host
Couldn't open PHONET device: No route to host
connect: No route to host
Couldn't open PHONET device: No route to host
Device already locked.
Lock file error. Exiting
Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x1cbb)!
