Lessons to be learnt.

1. Never compile from source when there is a package available.

2. If you have a problem with yum, try doing:
$ ls /var/cache/yum/*/packages/*.rpm
Check whether the package you were trying to install is in the list.
If the package is there then do:
# rpm -Uvh <pathname-to-package>
