What about standard functions which must take certain kinds of
arguments? Must they be handled with check-type? e.g.
(defun car (x) (check-type x list) (if x (real-car x) x))
vs.
(defun car (x) (cond ((consp x) (real-car x)) ((not x) x) ((error
'type-error :datum x :expected-type 'list))))
