Attached is a screenshot of
ftview 11 tahoma.ttf
using horizontal LCD-optimized rendering (RGB) -- this is pressing key
`L' once. There is no sub-pixel positioning; this is ftview from the
current CVS. IMHO, this doesn't look bad.

I don't know how to tune the LCD appearance -- this is an xft issue I
believe, not related to FreeType. A possible degradation of sub-pixel
rendering could appear due to a recent change in FreeType's CVS:
- The linear advance width and height values were incorrectly
rounded, making them virtually unusable if not loaded with
FT_LOAD_LINEAR_DESIGN.
Maybe you can check the bug database or file a bug report to the
people who maintain the desktop you are using (gnome? kde?); this
would force those guys to actively look at the problems you
experience. Maybe there is really a bug in FreeType lurking around,
who knows :-)
