[Freetype] Can not run ftview on Solaris 2.8

We are trying to build freetype 2.1.3 with ft2demo on our Solaris 2.8 using
gcc 2.95.2. Everything went smoothly until when we tried to test the demo
executable ftview. We did:

  ftview ppem /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/Corsiva.ttf

but got the following error message:

   could not allocate display surface

     error = 0x0000
