The following xbindkeys configuration works for me, whenever Emacs is
running, no matter who has focus:

"emacsclient -e '(emms-previous)'"
     Mod4 + p
"emacsclient -e '(emms-next)'"
     Mod4 + n
"emacsclient -e '(emms-stop)'"
     Mod4 + k
"emacsclient -e '(emms-pause)'"
    Mod4 + l

This works instantly, never a delay. The great thing about xbindkeys is
that I keep my keybindings over different window managers (should I try
Gnome?)
