I guess that means that you don't have the emoji font installed?

Yeah, for these emoji grapheme clusters, I should check the availability
of the glyph with something like

(font-get-glyphs (car (internal-char-font nil ?😀))
                 0 (length "🔽") "🔽")

I think...
