Thus losing history info, yes. But it's not that simple. You may get
prompted (apparently "out of nowhere") if the two processes happen to
write "at the same time".

That's not how it works: if you occasionally get prompted because of an
option you enabled, it doesn't bother you too much. But if you suddenly
get prompted for (apparently) no reason because of a feature you never
heard of and never enabled yourself it's much more annoying.
So in order to enable something by default, we need a higher standard
of robustness.
