The fundimental problem is that Jabber uses a "JOSS" (Jabber Open Source License), which, if I recall correctly, is a variation on the MPL. Jabber is itself a transport service, so the license issues are a bit different; for example, one would not link to jabber code directly, but use it to network transport information in XML format. However, this implies one creates a brand new gpl implimentation of at least a client interface library.

My own personal view is that JOSS is a barrier to wider implimentation and adoption of Jabber, and as such probably does not serve their best interests in the long term.
