GNUstep relies on special font "bundles" called nfonts.  Usually
Helvetica seems to be installed by default, but without a little work,
none of the other fonts on your system will be available to GNUstep
applications.  Fonts should be installed at
$GNUSTEP_SYSTEM_ROOT/Library/Fonts, $GNUSTEP_LOCAL_ROOT/Library/Fonts,
or ~/GNUstep/Library/Fonts.

A helpful program called mknfonts can be used to turn TTF files (and
possibly others, I don't really know) into nfont packages.  What I
usually do is just make a copy of my TTF font directy, run "mknfonts
*", and copy the resulting nfonts into
$GNUSTEP_LOCAL_ROOT/Library/Fonts.

If you run Debian, you may just be able to get it with apt; otherwise,
a quick Google search should turn up a .deb.  I can never seem to
find the source on the Internet, so I've made a copy available at
http://www.somuchwit.com/GNUstep/

Hello there,

I upgraded to gnustep-objc-1.4.0 and now the startup install script runs
fine. Everything compiles without any problems. I have a new problem when
I open an application: there are no fonts. All the menus show dotted
squares instead of characters.

Any idea what could be causing this? I removed ~/GNUstep from my previous
installation and "font_cacher" started and apparently built the cache.
