For what it's worth, I've got the same problem too - perhaps there is a 
problem
with the libtiff as you say.  Non-gui tools seem to be working fine.

If I can find time I'll try getting a libtiff from somewhere else - and 
if that
works, I'll update the README.  Unfortunately, I don't know when I can 
fit that in.
