There is one, see:
let connect_to_server pref user_msg =
  let timer = Perf.timer_start () in
  user_msg (Printf.sprintf (f_ "Connecting to server %s:%d...")

But as I said in a previous message, it seems to work. I added a simple
Printf.printf (f_ "Cancel") and it was successfully printed as
