It's to do with keywords. To disable it,
(keyword-style '#:none)
After that statement, keywords only have syntax '#:keyword. (There are
other possibilities besides "none": "suffix" (the default) and "prefix",
which cause the reader to accept keyword: and :keyword respectively.)
