zisofs2 is not yet supported by the Linux kernel. (And old zisofs does not
encode files larger than 4 GiB - 1 byte.)
So I see that I misinterpreted the fine documentation "The Linux kernel (as of 5.9) does not yet know this format".
And the output of kernel/isofs got lost as we copy this data off the ISO just before rebooting.
But for more general accessability, consider to compress the tarball by
the --gzip filter:
Your solution works fine for us, especially since "docker load" can work fine with tar.gz files out of the box.
Let me test this and see if my 22GB file survives this fine ;-)
If you know somebody who would be interested in bringing zisofs2 into
the Linux kernel, please forward my mail address or ask me for the 2 year
old patch.
I hope someone comes around and can help get zisofs v2 support into the kernel.
Unfortunately I lack the required skills.
