That's probably SCSI error 3,11,05.
(It would be nice if Linux could report the SCSI error codes
 rather than only their cleartext translation.)

The drive has physical problems to read the medium.
So the theory about random failure and success gains
probability.

Wasn't it the reading capability which comes and goes ?
(I understand that the DVD drive can always read.)
Elsewise this theory is as good as any other.
