Here are the results of "sudo dtruss -n tar -f -a >& ../../dtruss.txt" while running "make check TESTSUITEFLAGS=36" with the unmodified testsuite.

Once again please let me know if this provided the needed information or not.

Can you use dtrace instead?  It should work.  The point is that
we want to know what system calls are being executed.
dtruss works like truss but requires root privileges.
