Perhaps this has want you need:

I executed "sudo errinfo -n tar > tartrace.txt"
and then ran "make check TESTSUITEFLAGS=36" with the original testsuite file. After the test failed I hit Ctrl-C to stop errinfo, and attached the output to this email.

Please let me know if this has what you need or not.

Ah, I'm out of date with respect to MacOS, then.  (I don't use it.)

Can you use dtrace instead?  It should work.  The point is that
we want to know what system calls are being executed.
