Wrong:

The above quotation shows clearly that "cowardly" can function as an
adverb.  As you should know, there is a class of words in English that
are used as adjectives as well as adverbs, e.g.: deep, fast, early,
friendly, cowardly, etc.

Apart from the obvious fact that punctuation is not a part or
"feature" of the syntax, GNU standards clearly require that all
diagnostic messages "should not end with a period."
