I'm not sure I agree that it is delicate... I guess the lack of
"undo" and a big friendly "commit" button makes it a bit delicate.

Well, you can shrink an ext3 partition, and use the free space.
If you want exact commands, give us the output of:
parted YOUR-DEVICE print
