You want to type "select /dev/hdb", not "select /dev/hdb2".
Unfortunately, it's sometimes useful to "select /dev/hdb2"...
I'm not sure what to do about this problem.
In any case, if the device length == 0, I guess that just means
it's a crazy device, so a message like:
"This device isn't big enough to have a partition table or a file
system. You probably selected the wrong device."
