I was trying to free some space for a new partition, the partitons were
originally created by partiton magic 5.
I get the same problem compiling parted static with gcc 2.96 or dynamic with
gcc 3.2
address@hidden parted-1.6.3 # ./parted/parted /dev/hdb

Using /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/disc
Information: The operating system thinks the geometry on
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/disc is 2434/255/63. Therefore, cylinder
1024 ends at 8032.499M.

fdisk /dev/hdb:
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 2434.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
Command (m for help): p
Disk /dev/hdb: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2434 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Partition table entries are not in disk order
This is all the information I can give atm and I really need to free up some
space so I can implement LVM
Cheers
