Sorry, I'm not thinking straight!
I don't think the problem is related to geometry, or
anything like that...
I have a sneaking suspicion that Windows ME created or
modified your partition table. When it does that for large
partitions, it creates an invalid partition table (i.e.
inconsistent with the standard for 10 years, or whatever...)
Parted 1.4.11 can handle their brokenness... so use that!
