I did not realize that LilyPond corrected for the optical illusions due to note
pitches, for notes with the /same/ stem direction, but now I see it in the
Essay.
Apparently LilyPond gives up doing this optical correction when the spacing is
too tight. In the example Jan gives, she gives up when optical spacing appears
to be still possible, so what Jan reports would be a minor bug, not feature.
