Ok, I'll try that.
As for upgrading to a multiboot2 header: maybe it's a good idea, but
will not solve this particular problem.
I think that grub2 simply can't boot a system in vga text mode, at
least in my setting (uefi on 64 bits); a different multiboot header
won't change that.
To check that, I tried adding a mb2 header to boothdr.S but I get the
same message from grub2: "warning: no console will be available to os".
