I gave this a try and first got the following:
#v+
$ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.savannah.gnu.org:/sources/hurd co gnumach
cvs checkout: cannot open CVS/Entries for reading: No such file or directory
cvs [checkout aborted]: no repository
#v-
On a second try it worked.
Note that you'll most probably want to check out the gnumach-1-branch;
add `-r gnumach-1-branch' after `co'.
