I've attached a file produced by the command:
sudo make install > gsl-1.5_install.out

Unfortunately, I can't find anything in that file that suggests this link 
was created. But I swear, it really happens- I've repeated it several 
times.

I couldn't find anything in the Makefile that would do it, so I did
address@hidden gsl-1.5]$ grep "ln -s" * 
which suggested that the libtool script was a likely culprit. I haven't 
had time to decipher that yet.
