You aren't lost. Maybe I'm just meticulous here...
It's easy to explain with an example. You can dd an 1760kB floppy
image to a 'high' low-level formatted floppy. But you can't do so with
a 'normal' (low-level formatted) floppy.
Both floppies represent the same hardware...
fdformat(8) is the program to change the format.
