while making grub floppy `Permission denied`

Greetings.
I am running Debian 2.2 (potato) with kernel 2.4.2 and would appreciate some
help
getting started with grub.
After apt-get 'ing grub, I tried to create a grub boot floppy using the
instructions from
"info grub", but am getting an error "Permission denied".

Output as follows:
address@hidden:/usr/share/grub/i386-pc$ dd if=stage1 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 count=1
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
address@hidden:/usr/share/grub/i386-pc$ dd if=stage2 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 seek=1
dd: /dev/fd0: Permission denied
105+1 records in
105+1 records out
address@hidden:/usr/share/grub/i386-pc$

FYI: I've tried this as user (see above) and as root but either way get the
same error.
What am I doing wrong and what must I do to correct this?
Also, can I get a link to any good how-to's for the non-guru..

Thanks,
Marc.
