This is a bug with grub shell in 0.5.96 which was fixed in 0.5.96.1.
Installing grub from a grub floppy to the hard disk should work.  This
bug is not file-system specific.

I know of one reiserfs2 (linux-2.4) problem which AFAICS only affects
symlinks.  I don't think this is what hit you.  This problem is fixed
in the latest CVS version.
