Ok, here is more data, ...
First, i was using grub 0.5.95, downloaded the newer version today (0.5.96.1)
will see if it changes anything.
The exact message is :
Error: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by bios.
some more info is as follows :
when in the grub boot menu, before launching linux, i do a geometry (hd0) :
driver 0x80 : C/H/S = 1024/16/63, sectors = 1032192, LBA
^^^^^^^^^^
Wrong, ...
partition 0, filesystem reiserfs, type 0x83
partition 1,
Error: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by bios.
partition 2,
Error: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by bios.
When doing the same thing from linux's grub interface, i get :
driver 0x80 : C/H/S = 39769/16/63, sectors = 40088160, LBA
partition 0, filesystem reiserfs, type 0x83
(other 11 partitions are also correct).
Now It seems the geometry is loaded wrongly at boot time, but correctly in
linux.
I also noticed some strange behavior in the bios.
If i autodetect the drive,r it gives me the correct result, which is kept at
reboot if i reboot before grub is launched, but after grub got launched, and i
goit the above message, the bios setings change, and again the size is 528
(for 32 heads, 512 cylinders) still using lba though.
using the --force-lba option didn't change a thing.
Hope this helps, but then maybe the new version of grub solves this ?
Friendly,
Sven Luther
